What this does — and doesn't — cover
- SEC fields cover companies with a current SEC-registered ticker only — private companies and many foreign issuers have no SEC record even when a GLEIF LEI exists.
- GLEIF fields require the entity to hold a registered Legal Entity Identifier — most small/private businesses do not.
- An ambiguous name search returns
top_matchesto disambiguate rather than guessing — search by ticker, CIK, or LEI for an exact result. - Informational only. Not a KYB/AML business-verification certification, credit report, or legal opinion on corporate structure.
FAQ
How is this different from the CIK Lookup tool?
CIK Lookup only resolves a ticker/name to an SEC Central Index Key, for companies with a current U.S. SEC registration. Company Lookup goes further: it also checks GLEIF's global Legal Entity Identifier registry, so it can identify private companies and foreign issuers that have an LEI but no SEC ticker, and it surfaces parent-company relationships neither route alone provides.
What is an LEI, and why would I need one?
A Legal Entity Identifier is a 20-character global reference code for a legal entity, maintained by GLEIF (the Global Legal Entity Identifier Foundation) as public, open (CC0) data. It's commonly required for financial reporting, counterparty due diligence, and cross-border trade — and it exists for many private and foreign entities that have no U.S. SEC ticker at all.
Does this cover private companies?
Only if the entity has a registered LEI. SEC fields require a current SEC-registered ticker (public companies only); GLEIF fields require a registered LEI, which many but not all private/foreign entities hold. A company with neither returns a clean no-match result.
What if my search name matches more than one company?
You get back a top_matches list to disambiguate rather than a guessed single answer. Search by ticker, CIK, or LEI instead for an exact, unambiguous result.
