SEC EDGAR Company Facts: find the right value by ticker or CIK

Start with a ticker or CIK

The SEC's EDGAR API documentation shows the Company Facts endpoint as data.sec.gov/api/xbrl/companyfacts/CIK##########.json, with a ten-digit, zero-padded CIK. If you have a ticker, first map it to the correct CIK and company name; do not assume a ticker is permanent or unique across time. Our free CIK lookup can help with that step.

Read the fact before comparing it

Company Facts groups values by taxonomy and concept, then by unit. A tag such as Assets is an instant at a balance-sheet date; a revenue value covers a duration. A later filing can report a fact for an earlier period, so “most recently filed” and “latest period end” are different filters.

1. Concept: confirm the accounting tag answers your question. Companies can use different reported concepts; a missing tag is not a zero.
2. Unit: compare USD with USD, shares with shares, or USD per share with the same unit. The SEC separates facts by unit in its API.
3. Period: retain the start and end dates, fiscal year, fiscal period, and form. A quarterly duration is not the same as a year-to-date or annual duration.
4. Filed date: keep the filing date and accession number so a later reviewer can trace the number back to the disclosure and spot amended filings.

The SEC documents that its XBRL APIs aggregate standard taxonomy facts applying to the entire filing entity. Company-specific extensions may therefore require reading the underlying filing. Use the SEC API reference for the source format and update schedule.
